Biotechnology
Origin is the leader in large scale transformation
and molecular marker research, and
their applications in crop improvements in China.
Our target is to develop into one of the most important research
center for biotechnology in agriculture within three to five years,
bringing new products into the market. Our next target is to ensure
our research efforts are known not only within China but also overseas.
Transformation
research
We have established several plant genetic engineering technology
platforms, including gene cloning, vectors construction system,
large-scale genetic transformation of maize, and detection of transgenic
plants.
We have the ability to construct high expression vectors of some
important traits, and then transform them into maize inbreds. Together
with molecular identification and field selection, we can obtain
high quality transgenic lines. Our goal is to insert traits into
hybrids with excellent market potential.
We have transformed herbicide resistance, insect resistance and
drought stress genes into corn inbred lines. The transformation
and evaluation processes will be completed within 3 years, and new
transgenic hybrids will be ready for marketing in 3~5 years.
Marker-Assisted Breeding
Origin
is currently working under a co-operating agreement with Chinese
Agricultural University, to use SSR markers, and analyze the heterotic
grouping of maize germplasm in China. Our results established several
heterotic groups, which will greatly enhance conventional breeding
and raising the efficiency of the breeding process. We are also
developing markers for the selection for disease resistance lines
to try to accelerate the breeding process. Besides using DNA Marker
for assisted breeding, we also successfully built the fingerprint
libraries for both corn and rice, using it for variety protection,
and for purity and true identity analysis.
